Obon お盆

Obon is one of the most important events for the Japanese. It lasts for three days and today is the last day on Okinawa. (The date differs depend on the area but in Okinawa, it began the day before yesterday (August 15th ) and ends today (August 17th) as we hold it according to the lunar calendar)

It is believed that during these three days, deceased ancestors are allowed back from the spirit world to visit their homes of their families. Many people go back to their home town as this is the very important family gathering time.

The first day of obon in Okinawa is called “Unkē”. On Unkē, we place a variety of food in front of a butsudan (family altars) in order to let our ancestors know that they are welcomed.  The last day of obon is called “Ūkui”.  Ūkui is the day that we send their spirit to their way.

Eisā is one of the things that many people in Okinawa are looking forward to watch during obon. Eisa is a traditional dance of Okinawa that mostly local youngs perform. Eisā dancers parade through the community to honor and entertain ancestors’ spirits during Obon.
